Washington – The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) gave the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia an ultimatum if the said website will not remove the agency’s official seal from their site it will face criminal charges.
In the said website the FBI’s seal is featured together with its entry of the online information bank.
But according to the FBI, they did not allow Wikipedia the usage of their official seal. In a letter from the FBI to the said website they ordered to remove the agency’s seal for it may copied and would cause several unwanted damages.
“The FBI has not authorized use of the FBI seal on Wikipedia. The inclusion of a high quality graphic of the FBI seal on Wikipedia is particularly problematic, because it facilitates both deliberate and unwitting” copying and reprinting of the seal’s image”, FBI’s letter to Wikipedia.
Yet Wikipedia is standing on its ground that it did not violate any law by placing the agency’s seal on the said website. And it also assures to face the said charges if sued.
“Badges and identification cards are physical manifestations that may be used by a possessor to invoke the authority of the federal government. An encyclopaedia article is not. The use of the image on Wikipedia is not for the purpose of deception or falsely to represent anyone as an agent of the federal government”, Wikipedia’s explanation to FBI’s letter.
